Frozen bubbles+hot water tossing

To help you guys pass the time over the next couple weeks.

About frozen bubbles:

Soap bubble skin is made up of two layers of soap molecules surrounding a layer of water molecules. Since temperatures of 10°F and lower are below the freezing point of water, the thin layer of water in the bubble skin freezes quickly before the bubble has a chance to burst.

Bubbles that are made by drawing a wand through cold air freeze almost instantly but bubbles blown by mouth contain warm air. When blown bubbles meet cold air, the warm air inside the bubble contracts as it cools causing the skin to wrinkle. The soap film adds strength to the frozen layer of water within the bubble wall. Because the bubbles freeze quickly, they will be small.

About hot water tossing:

Very hot or boiling water will freeze into tiny ice crystals almost instantly when tossed into frigid air (-30°F/-34°C) forming an icy mist. Boiling water is close to the point of vaporization into gas so it breaks into minute droplets when thrown into the cold air. The tiny droplets lose heat so quickly that they freeze almost instantly.

I'm not vegetarian or vegan but I was surprised by this...

About 50% of the cane sugar sold in the US is filtered through bone char and many veg*ns avoid it for that reason. That still leaves another 50% of cane sugar that isn't bone char filtered, though you'd have to call manufacturers to find out whether they do or not (C&H and Domino do filter with bone char.)

Beet sugar, which is more common than cane in some parts of the country is never bone char filtered, so is always veg*n friendly.

You can also buy unbleached, organic sugar, which is sometimes sold as evaporated cane juice. It subs 1:1 for regular granulated sugar and looks just like it except that it's a pale blonde color instead of pure white. This is what I use when granulated sugar is called for.

There are also natural alternative sweeteners like agave nectar and stevia which can replace sugar (and are lower GI foods so they can even be well-tolerated by some diabetics.)

Loosly based on a man I met in Tokyo.

Early that day the weather turned and the snow was melting into dirty water. Jorge knew that this was the last time he would ever walk past the frozen oak trees that lined Elon University’s miles of cobblestone sidewalks. A storm that packed cars in their parking spaces the previous day had somehow transformed into slush overnight. Jorge was glad that the fountains and lakes were still frozen over, so he wouldn’t have to stop and think about the visual comfort he had always received from them, especially when he first stepped onto Elon’s campus over three years ago. Regardless, he was busy counting the few short weeks until he would have graduated. Instead of a degree, with some generic apologies and vague assurances that the matter was entirely out of their control, the school had handed him this letter and sent him on his way. Apparently, Jorge and many other students and faculty of questionable foreign descent were being cast off from institutions around the country.
Jorge obsessively packed every suspicion he could imagine and item he owned into one giant mess. He knew that in his own country only twenty percent of the kids even made it to secondary school and in a blink of an eye he was cut short of his lifelong dream, a degree from a highly ranked American school. For some reason, Jorge couldn’t stop thinking about the person who had written the letter; some chubby waste, sitting behind her desk with an associate’s degree, who felt no shame for taking from him what he had worked longer and harder for than she would ever work in her entire life. He had two weeks to get on a mandatory flight out of American territory, and although he was dumbfounded as to why the U.S government would remove so many of its most elite educators, many of whom had attained their masters and PhD’s in American institutions, he was able to start to piecing together the reasons for his own dismissal.
Jorge was outraged and immediately decided that, whatever might happen, going back to where he had come from was not an option. He would never go back. He sold everything he owned and, together with the small amount of money he had been able to save working for the school newspaper, set out to find his sister who was living in an industrial town in Japan, outside of Kawasaki. He knew that his sister’s husband Sam, who covered as a TEFL English teacher, actually worked for an underground anti-establishment publication company. Their agenda was to release news and information normally hidden or covered up by the Japanese government. Sam hated the idea of letting Jorge into this endeavor, but his talent for journalism was unmistakable and he was soon put to work.
Jorge enjoyed exposing injustice and found solace at the new job. He could taste revenge while he and the rest of the world watched America’s political failures and crumbling economy. When that wasn’t enough he imagined the government in places like India and China laughing under there breath as all the their American educated individuals poured back into jobs and schools. It was only a matter of time though before these little victories failed to satisfy him. He realized that he was simply watching them on TV and actually had no role in what was going on. He wanted to have a part. He could never forge the embarrassment of reading that letter.
He heard of an incident that involved two U.S. soldiers stationed in Okinawa, in which they had abducted and raped a 12 year old Japanese girl. The United States had taken them into custody, denying the requests of the Japanese government to have them tried in Japan. Finally he saw an opportunity for vengeance. Over the next months he became consumed with reporting on every transgression and subsequent cover up by the U.S military in Japan. Some called him obsessive, but he didn’t see it like that. At first he was upset when people started to avoid conversation with him, but Jorge knew that he couldn’t blame them for not understanding. They had never felt what it was like to be disregarded, to be cast off in the name of ignorance, to lose everything, just before the consummation.
After months of meticulous coverage of military violence, Jorge watched as, again and again, the U.S. went unpunished for their actions. Nothing was changing. His work was not enough. He had to do more.
The following week Jorge left Kawasaki for Okinawa on a trip to seek out victims affected by American soldiers. Frustrated by language barriers and unreceptive locals who found his presence rather suspect Jorge gave up and stopped in a bar to escape the frozen city. He was tired and did not understand why locals did not see his presence as something to be appreciated. He had traveled hours to address the injustice of these crimes.
As Jorge entered the bar cold and thwarted the last thing he had hoped to see was a young American soldier boasting ignorantly at the Japanese waitress. He began to drink excessively and reveled in his new found confidence. He felt that he could do no wrong and before he realized what was happening his feet were carrying him across the bar where he stopped unusually close to the soldier’s chair. The soldier, Broussard, as his tag identified him had been there for a while and was obviously drunk. He immediately went on the offensive, telling Jorge to get the fuck away or he would gladly help him. Jorge as if it was the most natural reaction placed his hand around Broussard’s neck and squeezed, finally stopping the endless flow of insults.

But for those of you who haven't and for all those other curious minds...The Germans use this word to describe someone that always needs an extra sausage, there own flavor. Similar to Danny DeVito's need to order something that isn't found on the menu in “Get Shorty”, but I Imagine most commonly used to describe oh no...Americans! Fahrenheit, AM, PM, the list goes on.

Pancho Villa Reward

PALOMAS, Mexico, March 9 (UPI) -- Mexican relatives of the man who killed Francisco "Pancho" Villa in Texas 92 years ago say they're owed the reward offered by the U.S. government.

The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday that the family of Jose Saenz Pardo, one of Villa's assassins, says it is are owed the $50,000 its forebear never received.

Maria Fernanda Carrillo Saenz Pardo, who is Saenz Pardo's granddaughter, said her family should be paid.

"At this stage, it's a question of honor, not about money," she said. "We want the United States to make good on its word. They wanted Villa, dead or alive. We fulfilled our end of the bargain."

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City said the U.S. government offered no reward, noting that a resolution authorizing a $50,000 bounty was introduced in Congress but never approved, the newspaper reported.

She said there was a $5,000 reward apparently offered by officials in Columbus, Texas. Columbus Mayor Eddie Espinoza said he knows nothing about the reward.

"I have absolutely no idea where that money is. It was a long time ago. All I can say is we don't have it."

Giant Stone Balls of Costa Rica?

Workmen hacking and burning their way through the dense jungle of Costa Rica to clear an area for banana plantations in the 1930s stumbled upon some incredible objects: dozens of stone balls, many of which were perfectly spherical. They varied in size from as small as a tennis ball to an astonishing 8 feet in diameter and weighing 16 tons! It is unknown who made them, for what purpose and, most puzzling, how they achieved such spherical precision.

Maybe all volcanoes have GIANT STONE BALLS. A little theory of our existence.

Last night I witnessed one of the most traumatizing events of my short lived life. I brought my mother to see Julian Schnabel's newest film "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," a film about a successful photographer who undergoes a cerebral vascular stroke, and then rewrites his life by commmunicating through one eye. What I didn't know I was going to witness was the highest flow of unfortunate irony ever to accompany a film. A man in the crowd also went into what everyone decided was some type of seizure. Ambulances, panic attacks, and Momma Noonan to the rescue, as my mother jumped over piles of legs in the aisles to perform what was almost going to be CPR. The man fortunately snapped out of it, the film went on, but wow what a movie and what an experience, good luck wherever you are man.

The "Illusionist" will be the second animated feature film by Sylvain Chomet,director of The Triplets of Belleville....one of the best animations I've ever seen. He has a new film expected to be released in 2009.

The film will be based on an unproduced script that the French mime, director and actor Jacques Tati wrote in collaboration with famed screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière between Mon Oncle and Playtime. The script was passed to Chomet by Tati's daughter, Sophie Tatischeff, when Chomet was seeking permission to use a clip from Tati's 1949 film Jour de fête in Les Triplettes de Belleville. Tatischeff suggested an animated film as she did not want an actor to play her father.

The main character will be an animated version of Tati, who will be personally animated by Chomet. The plot revolves around a struggling illusionist who visits an isolated community and meets a young lady who is convinced that he is a real magician. The film will be set in Scotland in the late 1950s.

I guarantee this will be worth seeing.

I heard JFJO a few years ago at the Blue Note with "Duo", great show... (Free entrance and drinks were nice). These guys played some unique covers and Benevento always kills it. Some time went by and I couldn't recall their name until I recently rediscovered them through a friend. I ordered the CD "Sameness of Difference" after a wonderfully hilarious description of my friend’s time with JFJO in Amsterdam.

Check um out for some good jazz.

The Sameness of Difference was released in the Fall of 2005 and recorded in collaboration with acclaimed producer Joel Dorn. A 13 track collection of both covers and originals, it's a testament to the 13 years that the ensemble has spent together. Throughout the album, the band explores their influences and offers interpretations of music by The Flaming Lips, Charles Mingus, Neil Young, Brian Wilson, Dave Brubeck, The Beatles, Bjork and Jimi Hendrix.

Also the Duo have a new CD called "Invisible Baby" get it!

The Hospitium takes its name from the ancient Greek practice of hospitality. “The God of Strangers” would smite those who denied travelers food and shelter. This collective provides a safe haven for independent visual, musical and performing artists.

on DEC. 2nd the collective will be exhibiting in “Open Spaces”, a one day art festival put on by Bushwick Open Studios. There will be group shows throughout the McKibben Lofts and East Williamsburg area including 4 local galleries all day long.

The Tuber magnatum truffles sell between 200€ and 400€ per hectogram ($1000 - $2000 per pound). In 2007, due to devaluations of the dollar, white truffles were selling at $3000 - $4000 per pound. They produce a scent that mimics a male pig sex hormone, and for this reason, female pigs have been used historically in Europe to help find truffles. However, more recently, dogs have become preferred for truffle hunting since they can be trained to just find the truffles whereas sows eat the truffles as soon as they find them.

This place is wondrous, the "Brothers" really got a eye for design. The best part about this building is that it has become a landmark meeting point, everybody knows the bright yellow storage building on Atlantic, but not everybody is giving the "Brother's" the respect they deserve, I love you Brother's!!!

During the height of the space race in the 1960s, legend has it, NASA scientists realized that pens could not function in space. They needed to figure out another way for the astronauts to write things down. So they spent years and millions of taxpayer dollars to develop a pen that could put ink to paper without gravity. But their crafty Soviet counterparts, so the story goes, simply handed their cosmonauts pencils.

a few sites say its a myth, but hey the pen does exist, they must have put some money into it.

It’s a sad business thats raping us one at a time at an average $0.10 per message sent and received. But hey, who could deny skipping all the bullshit for a thoroughly revised memo that "all encompassingly" expresses there feelings (thanks Mitch). wait, theres some trickery involved, and this is where the inner beauty lies, because now that you have more time to think and run away you'd better be more clever stanley, this could be your however many minutes (to write it, cut it, paste it, save it,load it, check it, quick rewrite it) of fame.
